Do you know why thinner cashmere yarn is more expensive?

2025-08-01

Cashmere is not only limited to winter, and the thinner the cashmere, the more expensive the unit price is actually than the thicker one. I think most people don't quite understand this, because in the conventional thinking, what is held in the hand is the real thing. Holding a thick cashmere sweater is naturally more reassuring than a sweater as light as a thread or as thin as a cicada's wing.

Why are thinner cashmere sweaters more expensive?

Because most fine cashmere is of the Worsted Cashmere Yarn, such fabrics are all top-quality cashmere sweaters. Worsted cashmere not only has extremely high requirements for raw materials, but also has a rather special manufacturing process. The higher the count of the yarn, the better its quality. The count of worsted cashmere yarn is much higher than that of carded cashmere, and it also has extremely high requirements for the weaving process of the finished garment.

Worsted cashmere has higher requirements for the quality of raw cashmere. Only high-quality cashmere fibers can produce cashmere products as thin as a cicada's wing. To produce high-count cashmere yarn, cashmere from the shoulders and sides of one-year-old goats living in high-altitude areas from February of the previous year to April of the following year is mostly used. The average fineness is below 15.5 microns and the length is over 40mm, which is extremely precious.

 Knitting Technology

The worsted cashmere also has higher requirements for knitting equipment, requiring 16 GG or 18 GG flat knitting machines. Moreover, within the same time frame, the weaving process of fine-spun cashmere is more difficult to operate than that of coarse-spun cashmere. Additionally, great care must be taken during the subsequent water washing treatment, as any carelessness may result in uneven yarn and the formation of chicken claw marks. Therefore, the water washing technicians also need to have high skills in the ironing process.

Those familiar with cashmere know that no other fiber can match this natural animal fiber in terms of skin care. Cashmere is suitable for close-to-skin wear, and its soft and smooth touch, like flowing water, can only be felt when it is in direct contact with the skin. Fine-spun cashmere is particularly suitable for making thin, close-to-skin garments for spring and summer. Cashmere is light, soft, transparent and smooth. When this experience is woven into a light knitted cardigan or a comfortable soft T-shirt, it is like the gentle breeze of spring and the flowing water of summer, and will eventually become an irresistible obsession.
